An Educated Buyer Is the Best Quality Control: A Signify (formerly Philips Lighting) Inspector's View

I work on the quality side of lighting at Signify (formerly Philips Lighting). I'm not a salesperson. I'm not a product marketer. I'm the person who reviews first-article samples before they're released to customers—roughly 200 products a year across commercial, emergency, horticulture and sports lighting. My job is to catch the failures before someone has to look at a dark ceiling and wonder who to blame.

After years of doing this, I've landed on an opinion that surprises people: the most powerful quality check is an educated customer.

That sounds like a strange thing for a manufacturer-side person to say. If you understand our products better, you might ask tougher questions. But that's exactly why I like it. Tough questions make us build better fixtures. They also help you choose the right solution, and the right solution rarely comes back with a warranty claim.

The most expensive lighting mistake isn't necessarily a bad fixture. It's a good fixture installed for the wrong reason.

Most buyers compare the wrong numbers

Search trends tell me a lot about how people think. Someone shopping for lighting might type luces downlight into a search engine and then compare two products by wattage or price. I understand why. Wattage is an easy number to find. The problem is that wattage tells you almost nothing about whether a downlight will work in your ceiling.

A downlight is a system. It has a housing, a reflector, a driver, an LED light engine, thermal management and a trim. The hottest part isn't the lamp you can see. It's the driver you can't see. If the housing doesn't move heat away from the driver, the LED gets brighter for thirty minutes and then slowly fades. The color can shift. The driver can fail early. Two downlights with the same wattage can perform very differently.

Look, wattage is useful for energy calculations. But it's not a performance spec. The question everyone asks is: How bright is it? The question I wish more people asked is: What does this downlight do after three hours? Is it UL listed for insulation contact? Can you dim it with the control system in the building? What happens to the light output if the ambient temperature in the ceiling plenum is high? The answers matter more than the wattage.

The same logic applies to chandelier lamps, though the details are different. A chandelier is a decorative object, but it still uses a lampholder, wiring, and often a dimmer. Buyers focus on the look of the lamp or whether it gives warm light. The practical questions are usually about base type, maximum wattage, enclosed fixture ratings, and dimming compatibility. I can't count how many beautiful chandeliers have been delayed because someone ordered the wrong lamp base or found that the LED lamps flickered on an older dimmer. That's not a product failure. It's a specification gap.

From the outside, quality control looks like checking for scratches and dents. It looks like walking into a lab and reading numbers from instruments. The reality is that I spend a lot of my time translating. A customer asks why one fixture costs more than another. I explain that the components have different rated lives. A salesperson asks for approval on a substitution. I ask what data supports the substitution. Translation is where quality is won or lost.

A spec sheet isn't a secret. It's a test.

I've heard customers say spec sheets are written to confuse them. I don't think that's true. Most spec sheets are simply written by engineers for engineers. The useful information is there, but you need to know which lines matter.

Take LED lifetime. The lighting industry relies on the IES LM-80 test method to measure how an LED package's light output changes over time. That data is then used to estimate L70 life—the time when the LED package has dropped to 70% of its initial luminous flux. A claim of 50,000 hours means more when it is backed by LM-80 data. If a manufacturer declines to share that data, I treat the claim as unverified.

Then there are the safety and performance listings. In North America, a complete luminaire is normally tested to UL 1598. For horticulture products, DLC listing can matter for rebates and utility programs. IP ratings tell you about dust and moisture resistance. IK ratings tell you about impact resistance. If a product doesn't carry the markings you expect, the burden falls on you to ask why. It shouldn't have to, but that's the reality of buying from unfamiliar suppliers.

I've rejected first articles for smaller issues than those. In our Q1 2024 audit, I measured a downlight at 8% higher input power than the label stated. The vendor said it was within an acceptable tolerance. We sent it back anyway because today it's an input power label; tomorrow it might be the photometric report. A customer deserves a product that matches what it claims to be. If you're a buyer, you can use that same standard—ask for the actual test report, not just a brochure.

How to install a light fixture without existing wiring: ask the next question

No list of lighting questions would be honest without mentioning how to install a light fixture without existing wiring. It's a common search term, and I understand why. Maybe you bought an older house. Maybe a room only has a switch controlling an outlet. Maybe a hallway has no ceiling box at all. The impulse is to find a fixture that doesn't need wiring.

The honest answer is that a traditional hardwired fixture needs wiring. Under the National Electrical Code, luminaires must be connected to an approved junction box, and that box must be accessible. You can't run cable through the ceiling and leave splices hidden. You can't just hang a chandelier from a drywall anchor and connect the wires with electrical tape. Those shortcuts fail, and some of them fail with heat and fire.

If there truly is no wiring at the location, the safe options are usually a fixture that plugs into a receptacle, a battery-powered fixture, or a new circuit installed by a qualified licensed electrician. For a permanent decorative ceiling fixture, a new circuit is often the right solution. That process may cost more than the fixture, but it's the process that separates a renovation from a liability.

I once trusted a contractor who told me an existing box was rated for the new fixture. I was in a hurry. The box turned out to be plastic, cracked, and mounted to drywall, not to structure. We had to cut the ceiling open after the painter finished. I still kick myself for not asking for a photo before installation. If I had asked, I could have documented the support and avoided the rework. That lesson now lives in our review protocol.

If the fixture is a chandelier, add lamp selection to your plan. Choose chandelier lamps that fit the socket, respect the maximum wattage, and are rated for enclosed use if covered by glass. It seems basic, but mismatched chandelier lamps cause more returns than many fixture defects.

What Signify horticulture taught me about good customers

The best proof that customer education creates quality is Signify horticulture. I'm not a horticulture scientist, but I see the orders and the feedback. The difference in outcomes often comes down to how the customer started the conversation.

A buyer who only asks for the strongest LED grow light is easy to satisfy, but not necessarily easy to help. A buyer who explains their crop, their greenhouse layout, and their light goals is going to end up with something useful. The same fixture, placed in the wrong environment, can produce disappointing results.

People assume horticulture lighting is just bright light for plants. There's more nuance. Plants have different demands at different growth stages. Some need different spectral ratios. Some need higher intensity to hit the desired daily light integral. You don't have to know all of it. But knowing enough to ask about PPF rather than wattage changes the entire conversation. It also tells the supplier that you care about outcomes, not just output.

You don't have to be a lighting engineer

At this point, you might think I'm asking every customer to become a lighting engineer. I'm not. I just think you should ask three questions before a significant purchase:

  1. What problem is this fixture solving? A downlight, chandelier, emergency unit and grow light don't perform the same job.
  2. What proof shows that the product will perform as rated? Look for LM-80/L70 data, recognized safety certifications, and warranty terms you can actually understand.
  3. What happens when you need service or replacement parts? Check whether the driver is available, whether the product line will still be supported, and how you would replace the fixture in five years.

Those three questions don't require an engineering degree. They require a little patience and a supplier willing to share information. If a supplier hesitates at the first question, that's useful information too.

My experience is that an informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. They're less likely to buy the wrong product, so they're less likely to blame the manufacturer for their own mistake. And when they do need support, they can explain the issue in terms that help me solve it quickly.

Customer education is part of quality control

So here is my argument in one sentence: customer education isn't a sales tactic. It's risk management.

The fixtures we remember for the wrong reasons are usually the ones chosen without enough conversation. A customer overspecifies a decorative chandelier for a space with no wiring. A facility manager chooses a downlight by wattage and discovers it flickers on the building's control system. A grower buys a high-wattage fixture without checking the spectrum. All were preventable.

Ask the annoying questions. Ask for test reports. Ask what driver is inside and why that matters. Ask how to install a light fixture without existing wiring, and be ready for an answer that begins with: call an electrician. The quality of your lighting project depends less on the logo on the fixture than on the conversation that happens before it's ordered.
