- Request photometric data. If a sales rep can't provide IES files, that's a red flag. You don't need to understand all the numbers, but you do need to know whether light reaches the floor where you need it.
- Verify warranty and service path. A product warranty means nothing if the company doesn't answer the phone. Test the support line before you buy a batch.
There's something satisfying about opening a storage closet now and watching the lights respond instantly to a schedule. After the stress of an 11-month solar failure and the Zigbee fiasco, that's the payoff: a boring, reliable system. Boring is good.
When not to take my advice
To be fair, not every project needs connected lighting. If you're replacing a single bulb in a stairwell, a basic A19 LED is fine. Don't buy a Zigbee starter kit when you just need a timer switch. And if you need a solar downlight for a decorative garden spot, the cheap unit might be acceptable—as long as you know it's temporary.
Also, my experience is medium-scale commercial. I'm not the person to ask about stadium floodlights, horticulture greenhouses at production scale, or high-bay industrial lighting. That's a different level of engineering. The principle still holds, though: the cheapest quote is just the beginning of the story.
Granted, this requires more upfront work. It's easier to send a purchase order to the lowest bidder. But I've had enough late nights with a ladder to know that the upfront work is the cheap part. Buy the system, not just the fixture.
