Why Do LED Lights Need a Driver, Anyway?
If you're speccing a Signify project, the first thing to decide is the driver. Not the fixture, not the color temperature, not the total lumens. I've spent six years managing lighting procurement for a mid-size facility services company—about $180,000 in cumulative orders—and the most expensive mistakes I've seen weren't the fixtures themselves. They were mismatched drivers and overlooked compatibility issues.
LEDs need a driver because they're current-driven devices, not voltage-driven like old bulbs. A driver converts line voltage to the right DC current and keeps it stable. Get the current wrong, and the LED runs hot, flickers, or fails early. That's why spec sheets say 350mA or 700mA—and why you can't just swap drivers because the connector fits.

A high bay with a narrow beam at a low ceiling creates hot spots and dark areas, so you need more fixtures. A wider beam at a high ceiling wastes light sideways. I once selected a 200W high bay because it had the best lumens-per-dollar on paper. At our 30-foot mounting height, the beam spread meant we needed 20% more fixtures than the alternative. UVC lighting is the least forgiving category, and Signify UVC lighting is no exception. These aren't lamps; they're disinfection systems. The first question isn't how many watts—it's what safety interlock and exposure control plan comes with the fixture. UVC is not visible, and it damages skin and eyes if used wrong. We budgeted about 22% more for UVC safety verification, and it was the right call. Some UVC fixtures are for unoccupied spaces with occupancy sensors; others are designed for upper-air applications. They are not interchangeable.
Check the standards. UL 8802 covers UV-C germicidal equipment, and IES/NIER exposure guidelines set limits for occupied spaces. If a supplier can't show you the compliance documentation, walk away. In our Q1 2025 quote, the Signify UVC system had an 8-week lead time—factor that into your schedule.
When 'We Don't Do That' Means More Trust
I've learned to respect a supplier who says that's not our strength. In the lighting world, that phrase is rarer than it should be. Signify does professional lighting, controls, and specialized categories like horticulture and UVC. But if you need a highly custom decorative fixture with a bespoke finish, a specialist manufacturer may be a better fit. A vendor who tells you that earns my trust for the rest of the project. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises and delivers late.

If you're working in another market or under different electrical codes, product codes and installation rules will differ. And if you're replacing a chandelier bulb at home, you don't need a driver schedule—just match the base and dimming type. The TCO advice is for new construction and major retrofits, not lamp swaps.

If you're dealing with cold storage, high humidity, or demand spikes, the thermal and surge calculations will be different. That said, the habit that saves the most money is boring: keep a project notebook, write down the driver part numbers, and verify the spec sheet before sign-off.
