I'm the office administrator for a 350-person company. I manage all the lighting and facilities ordering—roughly $120,000 a year across eight vendors, reporting to both operations and finance. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I assumed lighting was the easy part. It wasn't.

What does Signify actually make?
More than bulbs. As of January 2025, Signify sells most professional fixtures under the Philips brand. It also owns the Interact connected lighting platform, so its portfolio includes LED fixtures, drivers, controls, emergency lighting, horticulture lighting, sports lighting, and a long list of retrofit components.
For an office buyer like me, that matters because you can standardize on one manufacturer across the building. I don't have to research a separate brand for emergency battery packs, downlights, high bays, and control modules. It also means I can ask one rep for photometric files, certification sheets, and wiring diagrams instead of chasing five different customer service departments.
That doesn't mean Signify is the only option. It does mean that when you're dealing with code requirements and project deadlines, having a single accountable manufacturer simplifies the process.
How do I choose Signify emergency lighting without overbuying?
From the outside, emergency lighting looks like a fixture with a battery. The reality is more specific. You're really buying a battery backup, a test switch, a charging circuit, and a certified driver—all in one unit.
The first thing I ask is, "What's not included?" Mounting hardware, code inspection, and the remote head can all show up later as extra line items. One vendor I used in 2022 didn't include the test switch in the base price, and our fire safety inspection caught it.
For Signify emergency lighting, I look for units that meet UL 924 and the current version of NFPA 101 (verify the current edition at nfpa.org). In 2024, I saved $250 by buying a cheaper non-certified emergency driver for a break room. The inspector flagged it before the fixture was even energized. Replacing it and rescheduling the inspection cost us $700. That was my "saved a little, paid a lot" lesson.
Are Signify metal halide lamps still worth buying?
It's tempting to think metal halide is dead. But there are still buildings with 100+ sockets, and not every retrofit budget can replace all of them at once.
Signify (via the Philips brand) still offers metal halide lamps for existing systems. They're a legitimate replacement lamp when you need to keep an old fixture running. The smarter move, though, is a plug-and-play LED retrofit that matches the existing socket—e.g., a 175W, 250W, or 400W equivalent. You keep the metal halide fixture housing, but change the lamp and possibly the driver or ballast.
One thing I learned the hard way: "matching the socket" doesn't mean compatible with the existing ballast. Check the retrofit lamp specification for ballast compatibility, especially if you're adding occupancy sensors. The cost difference between a $40 lamp and a $1,400 re-inspection is not worth the shortcut.
What is a Zigbee connector, and when do I need one?
A Zigbee connector isn't a physical power plug. It's a control module that lets a luminaire communicate over Zigbee, an open mesh network protocol (maintained by the Connectivity Standards Alliance; the current version is Zigbee 3.0).
Signify's connected lighting systems—like Interact—often use Zigbee at the device level. The connector snaps into the fixture or sensor, and once it's on the network, you can schedule scenes, dim, or collect data from that light.
When do you need it? If you're just switching lights on and off, you don't. If you want centralized control without pulling new control cables, that's where Zigbee earns its keep. In 2023, we added Zigbee connectors to our warehouse high bays instead of rewiring the entire ceiling. It took our electrician one day instead of three.
What should I look for in a Signify high bay?
High bay isn't one fixture. For a warehouse or gym, you're choosing a luminaire based on mounting height, lens/diffuser, light distribution, and controls.
At 25 ft, we usually spec a high bay with around 30,000+ lumens and a wide distribution. At 40 ft, you might want a narrower beam to actually get the light down. Don't let a sales rep skip the photometry file. I always ask for the IES file—the format used to calculate light levels—before I trust the lumen claim. We used Signify high bays in a 30,000 sq ft expansion in Q3 2024, and the photometric comparison was the deciding factor.
Also check whether the fixture is on the DesignLights Consortium QPL. That's a quick proxy for performance and warranty compliance, and it usually matters for utility rebates.
How do I layout recessed lighting in our office kitchen?
Most office kitchens are not that different from residential kitchens. You need task light on the sink, counter, and coffee station, plus enough general light to not feel like a storage closet.
Start with ceiling height. For a 9-ft ceiling, the rule of thumb is spacing the downlights about 4.5 ft apart, with 2.25 ft from the wall to the nearest light. For an 8-ft ceiling, roughly 4 ft apart; for 10-ft, about 5 ft apart. Then adjust for cabinets, fridge, and traffic paths.
In our office kitchen, I used six 4-inch downlights in two rows of three, centered over the main counter walks rather than on the room's geometric center. I also put the coffee station on a separate switch and used 3000K, 90 CRI. Food and mugs actually looked human. The initial plan had 9 lights in a perfect grid; cutting to six felt risky, but the extra three would've created pools of light on top of the fridge and the plastic bin storage.
