I don't chase every press release, but October 2025 had two announcements with actual procurement implications. Two things, really. First, the 3D printed lighting line expanded beyond design pieces into more practical fixtures — that changes the cost math for small-batch custom work, which I get into below. Second, the connected lighting roadmap. Signify pushed updates around Interact and Zigbee-based controls, which matters if you're already investing in smart fixtures.
Here's the thing: most lighting news doesn't change what I buy. These two announcements did. The first affects our custom fixture budget; the second affects what we spec for new builds. Is Signify 3D printed lighting practical or just a novelty?
It's practical for a specific use case: custom fixtures in small quantities. I evaluated a 3D printed fixture for a store refresh last year. Zigbee, if you're controlling more than a handful of fixtures. Wi-Fi bulbs are easy — no hub, and you control them from your phone — but every bulb becomes a network client. One office had a bank of Wi-Fi fixtures randomly dropping because the router hit its device limit during peak hours. A Zigbee setup keeps the bulbs off your business network entirely, so that failure mode disappears.
The Zigbee standard is maintained by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, and Zigbee 3.0 was supposed to make cross-vendor pairing straightforward. It does — mostly. The edge cases are still painful. We learned that the hard way when a certified third-party switch wouldn't pair with our hub through three firmware updates, which burned a week of commissioning time.
If you see "Zigbee connector" on a spec sheet, it's not a physical plug type. It means the fixture has a Zigbee radio and expects a hub. The physical socket is still E26/E27, GU10, or whatever fits the fixture. Philips LED bulb in 2025: still the right call for replacements?
Depends on the socket. For a standard Philips LED bulb in a utility room or a storage closet, you're probably paying for more than you need. A generic brand from a solid lighting distributor will do the job at a lower price. But for anything dimmable, any fixture that's hard to reach, or any area where color consistency across a ceiling matters, the brand premium is worth it.
I audited our 2024 replacement data and found that cheap bulbs failed about twice as often as Philips in sockets that run more than eight hours a day. The labor to replace a failed bulb — even a $2.50 no-name — ran about $18: ladder, travel, paperwork. That math settled the argument. Light almond is a warm cream tone designed to match almond-colored switches and outlets. White is the bright, clean default. Warm interiors — beige paint, wood tones, brass fixtures — lean light almond. Bright white walls and gray floors lean white. Philips makes both, by the way: two SKUs, same price. The cost isn't the issue; the spec is.
I have a scar from this. I told the electrician "match the existing plates." He heard "match them in most rooms." Result: white plates in the corridor, light almond in the offices. The plate cost difference was zero. The rework trip: $210.

Should we standardize everything on Signify?

Mixing brands in those categories turns simple repairs into compatibility archaeology.
For commodity bulbs and standard fixtures, we buy on spec and price. The brand label matters less.
One of my biggest regrets: not standardizing our emergency lighting earlier.
