Signify Bulbs vs Wiz Downlights: Choosing Spot vs Flood Light for Your Facility

When I first started ordering lighting for our office, I assumed the brightest bulb was the right bulb, and a lamp was a lamp. Three years and roughly 140 orders later, I know that's not true. The real question isn't “Signify or Wiz?” It's “what are you trying to light?”

I manage purchasing for a 220-person company with three locations. I process about 60-80 lighting and facilities orders a year. That means I'm the one buying Signify bulbs for the breakroom, Wiz downlights for conference rooms, and the occasional sconce downlight when a wall sconce needs a trim. It took me a while to realize there's no universal lighting answer. But in my experience, most decisions fall into one of three scenarios.

Why there is no one-size-fits-all answer

The fundamentals haven't changed: color temperature, beam angle, dimming compatibility, and total cost of ownership still decide whether a project feels right. The execution, though, has transformed.

The way I see it, you choose your scenario first, then the product. Let me walk through the three I encounter most.

Scenario 1: Simple replacement and general office lighting

If you just need to replace burned-out lamps or add standard fixtures, start with basic Signify bulbs—often sold under the Philips brand in the U.S. For a typical office, I look at lumens, Kelvin (4000K for workspaces, 2700–3000K for reception), and CRI. 80 is fine for hallways; 90+ for anything where color matters.

For recessed cans, the Wiz downlight range is a strong option because it offers app control without a hub. But honestly, if you don't need smart features, you can skip the connectivity and save money. One mistake I made early: I assumed “same specifications” meant same results across brands. Didn't verify. Turned out identical-looking bulbs had very different driver quality. Scenario 3: Spot vs flood beam angle

This is the one people get wrong most often. A stakeholder will ask, “Do you want spot or flood light?” and everyone stares at a spreadsheet. The simple rule: spot for highlighting, flood for area lighting. But in practice, you need to read the beam angle on the spec sheet. Per NEMA conventions, beam angle is measured where intensity falls to 50% of center. That number tells you more than the words on the box.

Spot bulbs have a narrow beam—roughly 15 to 40 degrees. Use them in a sconce downlight aimed at artwork, a retail display, or an architectural detail. Flood bulbs have a wider beam—60 degrees and up. Use them to wash a hallway, fill a breakroom, or light a parking area.

The mistake that taught me: I assumed “flood” sounded brighter because it covers more area. It does cover more, but with less intensity per wall. For a tall lobby ceiling, a narrow spot can deliver more useful light to the floor than a flood. In other words, don't choose a beam angle based on the word “bright.” Choose it based on what you want the light to do.

For a sconce downlight, think about the wall. If you want a soft pool of light below the sconce, a 40–60° flood works. If you're lighting a sign or a picture, go narrower. I usually order two or three options and test them in the actual fixture before buying in bulk (unfortunately, sample orders take time—but they're cheaper than reordering an entire floor).

The hidden cost question

I know this sounds basic, but the cheapest lamp is rarely the cheapest lighting. Total cost of ownership includes the unit price, driver compatibility, dimmer compatibility, labor to install, and the risk of returns. When I first took over purchasing in 2020, I bought a bulk case of cheap LED bulbs and watched three of them fail in the first quarter. The vendor honored the warranty, but the replacement labor came out of my maintenance budget. Now I check the product's rated life and DLC listing before I approve anything.

Signify's product pages usually list rated life and beam angle on the same page. I'd rather spend 10 minutes reading that page than three weeks explaining to the facilities team why the new downlights don't look right. (I've had to do that. It did not make me look good.)

How to decide which scenario you're in

If you're staring at a requisition and your cursor is blinking, run through this checklist:

  • Are you replacing existing lamps with no control requirement? Start with Signify bulbs or basic downlights. Don't over-complicate.

In my opinion, an extra hour with the spec sheet prevents the three-week “it doesn't look right” follow-up. And if you're still stuck, order one sample and test it. Your future self will thank you.
