In the LED world, 'downlight can' is often used to mean the whole recessed assembly, but technically the can is just the housing. When you search 'downlight can,' you're probably trying to figure out whether you can retrofit the old housing with an LED module.

Retrofit kits are a legitimate way to save money. But they're not generic. I assumed a 6-inch retrofit would fit any 6-inch can. Didn't verify. Turned out the spring clips didn't line up, and the trim sagged on one side. It was a small fix, but it turned into an extra labor trip. If you're starting from scratch, an integrated LED downlight is simpler: one unit, one warranty, no parts to mismatch.

Before any retrofit, ask three things: Is this kit listed for my specific can model? Can the driver be replaced from below the ceiling? Does the warranty cover a non-standard opening? The last one sounds overly cautious, but after the spring clip incident, I'm comfortable being annoying.
