Lessons for Anyone Handling Lighting Specs
Most people approach a lighting order like a commodity buy. You pick a color, a wattage, a control protocol, and you assume the vendor will handle the rest. The simplicity advice—"just specify the SKU and go"— ignores the nuance of how supply chains actually work.

- Physical sample against spec. Don't trust a digital swatch. Order one unit for review. It costs $30 and saves thousands.
- Firmware versions on any connected product. Whether it's a Signify hue updates compatible driver or a third-party Zigbee module, check the software revision. The hardware may be fine; the code may not be.
- Installation context. The classic question: "how to put recessed lighting in an existing ceiling?" The answer matters. If the depth is tighter than spec, the driver might overheat. If the ceiling insulation is different, the thermal dissipation changes. I've seen 8,000 units ruined because nobody asked "what's above the ceiling?"
This was accurate as of Q1 2025. The lighting industry changes fast—particularly with wireless protocols and energy codes—so verify current standards before committing to a spec.
What I Wish I Knew Then
If I could go back to 2020, I'd tell myself: the 5 minutes you spend confirming a single spec detail is worth 5 days of correction. The checklist isn't overhead—it's insurance.
