Emergency Lighting: When the Lights Go Out – Scenarios, Solutions & Who Makes Them

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to emergency lighting

I've spent the last six years coordinating urgent lighting orders — from office buildings that failed a fire inspection to outdoor festivals that lost power two hours before doors opened. And the most common question I hear? "When will the light come back in my area?" That one's tricky, because it depends on whether you're waiting for the grid or waiting for a delivery truck.

Here's the thing: emergency lighting isn't a commodity. Your best solution depends on your setting, your timeline, and your risk tolerance. I can't give you a universal answer — but I can walk you through the three most common scenarios I've seen, and what actually worked (and didn't) in each.

First, a quick note on who owns what

Scenario A: Commercial building – code compliance after a power failure

This is the scenario I handle most often. A facility manager calls after a blackout reveals that their existing emergency lights either didn't kick in or weren't up to code. The fire marshal is coming in 48 hours. Normal lead time for certified emergency fixtures: 5–7 business days.

In March 2024, a client needed 30 battery-backed emergency downlights (the downlight opbouw type — surface-mounted, easy to retrofit) for a retail space. They'd tried a budget vendor first; three of the units failed during a test. We sourced Signify's emergency-rated fixture, paid a 25% rush premium ($1,200 total instead of $960), and had them installed by 10 PM the same day. This one isn't about purchasing — it's about expectation management. I get this question from friends and neighbors during storms. Here's what I've learned from coordinating with utility companies: The estimated restoration time (ERT) on their website is often optimistic by 2-4 hours. If the ERT says 6 PM, plan for 10 PM. And if you're in a rural area, add another 2 hours.

If you're a business waiting for grid power to return, and you need to keep operations running, don't rely on the ERT. My company lost a $15,000 contract in 2022 because we trusted a "restored by midnight" promise — it came back at 4 AM, and we lost a full night's production. Now, we budget a portable generator + Signify emergency lights for any site with a critical deadline. The generator rental cost $800 for the night; the lost contract hurt a lot more.

How to figure out which scenario you're in

  3. What's the cost of failure? A $500 fine? A $50,000 lost contract? Your budget for "certainty" should scale accordingly.

If you're in scenario A or B, my sample size is about 200 rush orders (mostly commercial, some events). I can't speak to residential DIY installs as confidently — your mileage may vary. But the principle holds: when time is tight, the cheapest option is rarely the fastest, and the most reliable option is almost always worth the markup.
